Aqua is an 8 year old Westphalian that has been competing in dressage to a high level until his owner started to notice tension thoughout the back.
History and symptoms:
Aqua has suffered from recurring back tension since he was purchased (four years ago); he holds against the right rein and seems a little uncomfortable on that side.
His saddle was fitted two and a half years ago and owner believes it fits perfectly. Aqua’s problem has also been linked to a suspected (right) shoulder injury.
Aggravating aspects: Back and right shoulder symptoms appear to be irregular but can be slightly aggravated when exercised. This does not always prevent him from training but it is obvious that he is uncomfortable, he also tends to buck slighty when being ridden.
Investigation so far:
Gamma scan & MRI for suspected back issues
X-rays on hocks
Status: inconclusive
Veterinary Interpretation by Peter Leando PHd
There is inflammation paraspinally at the first lumbar region in the resting horse. Post exercise stress shows exacerbation R>L of the L1 region paraspinally. There is no indication of joint dysfunction at this level (central spine) and there is no indication of radiculopathy.
-
Bi-lateral inflammation on both sides of the lumber region was causing serious pain for Aqua. His saddle was though to be a good fit by the pressure was sending paraspinal muscles into spasm.
-
Thermal patterns of the saddle correlate with the findings at L1. Thermal findings support a local muscular dysfunction bilaterally R>L at the first lumbar region. Issue was present before exercise and saddle fit was ruled out.
-
Temperature differentals in L1 became more localised after exercise further supporting a local muscular dysfunction bilaterally R>L.
-
Summary:
With the exception of the upper lumbar region of the back and the right shoulder, all other regions show thermal patterns and temperature differentials that are considered within normal limits. With long term local muscular or myofascial dysfunctions such as those seen in this study, successful results have been achieved with local botox injections
